Marcie Featured Article - Your New Definition of PerfectionThis article is from a lecture given by Marcie Williams Browning to the Charlotte Whole Life Center meditation service on Sunday, August 10, 2008. Enjoy! The Princeton online dictionary says that perfection is the state of being without a flaw or defect. The Webster dictionary says it is freedom from fault or defect or an unsurpassable degree of accuracy or excellence. I say perfection is “Doing your very best in any given situation and celebrating every misguided choice because you learned from it.” The universe says we are all perfect right now at this very moment exactly as we are. It is possible to attain perfection by our human definition? Sure. Let’s explore test scores for example. If you answer all test questions correctly you have attained a perfect score. Let’s face it our world is not that black and white. If I were to ask each of you to describe your perfect day every single answer would be different but your description would be perfect for you. If we were to explore human performance the better you perform the better you can perform and the more that is expected from your next performance. No matter how good you do you can always do better. Perfection is a human judgment and we are always our own worst critics. Most of us have learned that perfection means never making a mistake or a misguided choice as I like to call them. Life experience has taught us this is an impossible task. Yet, we beat ourselves up on a daily basis for our non-perfect choices. Michael J. Fox of TV and movie fame once said, "I am careful not to confuse excellence with perfection. Excellence, I can reach for; perfection is God's business." I would suggest that you strive for excellence and let go of your old definitions of perfection. The Universe creates only perfection. For billions of years the earth was perfect. It was filled with noxious gases and totally uninhabitable by any life form and yet it was perfect. It was ever changing and evolving and it was perfect. At some point plant life began living on the planet and evolved to inhabit the entire earth and it was perfect. Evolution continued and animal life began and thrived and it was perfect. Then came man with self-awareness and a reasoning mind and suddenly this planet that the universe created was no longer perfect. Our human mind says if our existence was perfect, there would be no pain, fear or death. We wouldn't have poverty, hunger and conflict, and everyone would be happy all the time. Man is the first imperfect creature to exist in the universe. In the vast perfect expansiveness of the entire universe, there is this one tiny imperfection called human beings. The universe made a mistake. Because man has free will, the universe no longer has a hand in what goes on here. The universe has turned Earth over to us and we've made it imperfect. Can it really be that for the first time in the history of the universe God made a mistake? Is such a thing possible? And why are pain, fear and death necessary and perfect for plants and animals but not for us? The plant kingdom exists in perfection every day. The animal kingdom lives in perfection every day, but in the reasoning mind of man nothing is perfect. Did the universe make a mistake? Or are the imperfections we as human beings perceive simply calling us to expand our perspective? Perhaps the unpleasant aspects of life don't negate the possibility of perfection. They didn't when only plants lived on the earth. They didn’t when plants and animals lived on the earth. Why should they now just because we reside here? I say they have been a necessary catalyst in our personal evolution and that we chose to come here because of them. If unpleasantness can exist within the definition of perfection, then we, as humans, need to take a deeper look at the true meaning of perfection. Maybe it isn't that blissful, rosy place that we have all fantasized about. Maybe it's simply doing our best, however comfortable or uncomfortable it makes us. Would the universe have it any other way? The problem is that we see ourselves as separate from the universe. As spiritual seekers we know that is not true and yet we can’t seem to separate our human mind or ego mind from our true spiritual self. The spiritual self remembers where we were before we came here and knows where we are going when we are finished here. We are constantly looking to the future and not paying attention to the present. The present is all we have. Is it any wonder that we are obsessed with perfection? As spiritual seekers we understand that we are not separate from our Creator and therefore not separate from anything in the entire universe. As such, we are perfect – today, right now – exactly as we are. We need to stop focusing on our weight gain, our debt, our misery at our jobs, our family drama, our …. you fill in the blank. Our focus must be on perfection. When we focus on our weight gain we bring more weight gain. When we focus on our debt we bring more debt. When we focus on our unhappiness we bring more unhappiness. I teach my clients a technique that removes old subconscious programming that stops all of us from moving forward on a conscious level. If I only taught them that technique I would be doing them a disservice. Removing the old is only the first step. By removing the old programming we have created a void and the universe does not like voids. Rather than the universe randomly filling the void with whatever we are thinking about at the time I ask my clients to make a conscious choice and apply their efforts to filling the void with what they would like to be, where they would like to go, how they want their world to be. This applies to every aspect of our lives. Perfection is focusing your attention on what you want in your life. Perfection is focusing on solutions and not problems. Perfection is being in the present moment as many minutes during the day as you humanly can. Perfection is seeing perfection in everything and everyone. I have a dear friend who was in an abusive marriage for 10 years. When the abuse was at its worst she found herself staring at the wrong end of a gun. The gun was held to her head as her husband cocked the gun and pulled the trigger. She describes his look of surprise in great detail when nothing happened. It is something that is etched in her mind forever. At the time she could not see the perfection in this situation. She closed her eyes waiting for the next click and what she heard was complete and utter perfection. Soft snoring hit her ears. Her husband had been drinking, which was when he became violent, and he had passed out before he could finish what he started. She left that night ending over 10 years of abuse and never turned back. Perfection. A young woman had a job that she really liked. After several years of being at the job the group she worked with changed many times. She realized that she didn’t like the people she worked with anymore but still loved her job. She chose to focus on what she liked and not the problems she was facing. Each day she thanked the universe for her job, for perfect working conditions and for work that she loved. Within three months every single person in her group either transferred to other jobs in the company or left altogether. Had she given up when she wasn’t seeing perfection and left the job she loved she would have missed the true perfection. My son tells a story about Army Ranger School. This school is three months long with a mountain phase, a desert phase and a swamp phase. The final phase for him was in the swamps of Florida. This school really tried to break these young men on every level of their being. They were deprived of food, water and sleep for days at a time. This particular night my son was leading his squad on one of the last missions during their time there. They were taken to a location and had to find their way back to the original location. They were tired, thirsty and hungry and none of them were mentally sharp. After some time of walking, it seemed like hours to them, through chest deep water my son realized they were lost and he had no idea how to get to where they needed to be. He was feeling pretty desperate and definitely not seeing the perfection in the situation. He said he finally just stopped the squad and closed his eyes. He was feeling scared and alone and responsible for the eight men in his charge. Silently he asked for help from the universe and anyone else that could possibly help him. A few minutes later he opened his eyes and up ahead saw the Stay Puff Marshmellow Man facing him in the distance. The marshmellow man was pointing somewhere off to his left. He thought about it and finally decided it was his best option at the moment so he took his men where the marshmellow man was pointing. Not only did they reach the objective but they were the first squad to make it back to the objective site. He never did tell his men about how he found his way back. Perfection. It seems we can always see the perfection in every situation after we’ve resolved our challenge. My challenge to each of you is to begin to see the perfection in each and every challenge in the midst of the challenge and afterwards. I would like each of you to answer three questions. If these questions are difficult to answer or make you uncomfortable in any way I challenge you to work on getting comfortable answering them daily. They will serve you well for the rest of your life. What is perfect about you right now – at this exact moment? What is perfect about you today? What is always and forever perfect about you?
